ProStart Program
ProStart is a nationwide, two-year high school program that unites the classroom and the industry. It develops the best and brightest talent into tomorrow’s restaurant and foodservice industry leaders. In Michigan, 70 high schools and career centers use the ProStart curriculum with more than 5,000 students participating. Students learn vital kitchen skills, including food safety and knife cuts, and important management lessons, such as menu development and marketing. The state competition provides a hands-on opportunity for students to demonstrate the skills learned throughout the year and be judged by top industry professionals.

ProStart CurriculumProStart utilizes "The Foundations of Restaurant Management & Culinary Arts" curriculum and ServSafe guidelines, helping educators implement an effective learning experience in today’s classroom environment. A blended coverage of culinary arts and management topics are designed to develop well-rounded skills that translate to the workplace. ProStart is the career and technical education culinary program of choice of the Michigan Department of Education and exceeds all state standards.

National Certifications

Students who have completed the requirements of the Prostart Program are awarded an industry-recognized certificate titled the ProStart National Certificate of Achievement (COA).
Earning a COA means a student has:
Students who receive the certificate are eligible for NRAEF scholarship opportunities and course credits at some of the country's leading hospitality and culinary arts colleges and universities. Colleges providing credit are updated annually in the ProStart Student Passport.
Earning a COA means a student has:
- Successfully Passed the Level 1 Exam
- Successfully Passed the Level 2 Exam
- Completed 400 experience hours beyond classroom time
